The Atmosphere: A 1920’s-Inspired Speakeasy

If you plan on spending the 2020’s partying like it’s the 1920’s, then this is the place for you!

Catacomb 435 is all decked out in 1920’s-inspired décor. It’s certainly one of the coolest bars in Huntsville.

The seating is cozy and intimate. The lighting is low and sultry. The bar has gold art deco accents. Jazz plays from the speakers, while old black and white movies play silently on the a screen over the piano. The walls are exposed brick and stucco, in case you forgot you were underground. And every drink comes in a new and fun glass.

The speakeasy is located in a small space. The total capacity is about 30 people. If that isn’t intimate enough, you can snuggle away in one of the building’s old coal chutes for even more privacy.

You’ll forget all about the modern Huntsville just upstairs.

The Hand-Crafted Cocktails

The best part of this Huntsville speakeasy are their personalized, hand-crafted cocktails.

When you arrive, you’ll get a sheet of paper with a list of flavors and alcohols. In a build-your-own fashion, you’ll pick one alcohol (gin, vodka, bourbon, etc.) and up to two flavors (sweet, sour, spicy, smoky, floral, clean, crisp, etc.).

Depending on how busy they are, your bartender might ask you what specific flavors you like (apple, mint, sage, etc.) in order to build your drink. And when they serve your drink, they can tell you what all they mixed together.

Our bartender was able to do this for us when we first arrived, when there was only one other party besides ours. But for our second drink, it was all a surprise as the speakeasy had gotten a lot busier.

And don’t expect to get the same drink twice. You can fill out your order card the exact same way and still get a completely different drink!

These personalized drinks come with a price tag. Drinks range from $15 to $20 each, but they’re well worth it.

How To Get Into Catacomb 435

That’s what you really want to know — How do I get in??

It’s actually pretty simple. You just make a reservation. Then, Catacomb 435 will send you everything you need to know to get in.

Shortly before your reservation time, you’ll receive the password and instructions on accessing the speakeasy. The bar is located at 100 Jefferson St. N in the Downtown Storage building, if you’re having trouble understanding their directions.

There’s an antique red fire call box beside the door. You open it, press the buzzer, and give the bartender your password. The password is usually 1920’s slang, so you can really get into the mindset. The password changes daily, though, so don’t try anything shifty!

Once you’re in, you’ll follow the stairs down to the basement and enter an unmarked door, stepping through and back in time.
