Florida’s southernmost city is full of interesting people, a varieties of food, and plenty to see and do. It’s not difficult to plan an exciting trip in this unique and vibrant city. Below is my guide to living the island life Key West-style.
Paddleboard Through the Magical Mangrove Forest
A cross between surfing and kayaking, stand up paddleboarding gives you the best view of the incredible ocean life that is swimming just beneath your board. At SUP Key West you can take an eco-tour through the magical mangrove forest all while getting an incredible workout. The tour is beginner friendly as they’ll give you a short lesson and allow you time to get the hang of gliding across water.
Watch the Sunset
While everyone else crowds Mallory Square for the nightly Sunset Celebration of street performers, you can head on over to Ft. Zachary Taylor State Park for a significantly less obstructed view. Spend the afternoon exploring the fort grounds, then relax on the beach as the sun slowly sinks down behind the water. When the time is right, simply turn your beach chair toward the west and watch between silhouetted palm trees as the sunset reflects off the gulf and the numerous boats sailing past. The park closes after sunset, but that still gives you plenty of time to take postcard-esque photographs to share with your friends.
Let Loose at a Drag Show
Join the Aquanettes every night, and multiple times on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, at Aqua Nightclub for lots of glitter, glam, and fun. If you’ve never been to a drag show before, Key West is the best place for your first. The shows are lively with a lot of audience interaction, and the mojitos are fantastic as the costumes.
