Hiking the Camp Brumby Loop Trail | Georgia Hikes

The Camp Brumby Loop Trail takes you to the ruins of a Civilian Conservation Corp camp at the Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park. This short trail can be combined with other battlefield trails for a longer hike.

When we need a short, leisurely hike near Atlanta, we head to Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park and walk parts of the battlefield trails. For this fall hike, we settled on the Camp Brumby Loop Trail.

Here’s what you need to know about hiking this 2-mile connector trail.

Camp Brumby Loop Trail

The Camp Brumby Trail departs behind the Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park Visitor Center.

You’ll find the trailhead near the information kiosk and the start of the Mountain Loop Trail, following signs for Camp Brumby Trail. The trail follows along Kennesaw Mountain Drive before veering off toward the open field on the left. The official maps call this part of the trail the Visitor Center to CCC Site Trail.

The trail follows along for the length of the field, and then ducks into the cover of the forest for the remainder of the trail. The trail soon widens, becoming perfect for joggers, dogs, and hikers to share.

This is a pretty easy trail as the terrain remains mostly even for the length of the hike.

Soon, you’ll reach the remains of Camp Brumby, the trail’s namesake.

Camp T. M. Brumby Ruins

The loop begins less than a mile into the hike, veering off to the right. The loop circles the ruins of Camp T. M. Brumby, a Civilian Conservation Corp camp that existed here between 1938 and 1942.

The CCC camp was tasked with building the existing trail system in the park, working as park guides, and fighting forest fires. Posted signs along the trail mark the spots where various camp buildings once were.

The official trail maps call this portion of the trail the Brumby Camp Circle. This trail is really more of a lollypop loop.

The short loop ends and connects to the Camp Brumby Trail, which continues to the right for about 3 miles in one direction until it reaches Burnt Hickory Road. You could continue on this trail if you want a longer hike.

We only wanted a short hike, so we instead went to the left to finish up the circle and then retrace our steps.

After about a quarter of a mile, we kept to the right to follow along a paved path against Kennesaw Avenue for a change of scenery. On the official trail map, this is called the Camp Brumby-Mt To River Link Trail.

We turned left at the road and followed this paved Mountain To River Multi-Use Trail to the north. This was perfect for catching the changing colors of the fall leaves.

When the trail reached the open field, we took a well-worn shortcut up the edge of the field to the Visitor Center to CCC Site Trail. We followed this trail back to the Visitor Center and the parking lot.

We completed our hike in the parking lot at about 2 miles. This was a quick and easy hike that would be perfect for after work or for a weekend afternoon!
