A Beach Break at Magens Bay, St. Thomas

Magens Bay, St Thomas, US Virgin Islands

The white sand beach and turquoise waters lands Magens Bay on the top of many lists of the best beaches in the Caribbean. During our recent Royal Caribbean cruise, we docked at Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands and decided to make it a beach day at the beautiful Magens Bay.

Getting to Magens Bay

St Thomas, US Virgin Islands

To get to Magens Bay, you can book an excursion through your cruise line, or you can take a taxi. Taxis to Magens Bay are generally about $10 per person.

The taxi stand at the cruise port is a mad house. Taxis (which can fit somewhere around 25 people in each cab) clog the parking lot, honking and yelling at each other, trying to fight their way in and out.

If you want to make a few extra stops on your way to Magens Bay, make sure you insist on a private taxi. Even after telling multiple people that the four of us wanted to make a few stops on the way to Magens Bay, they still put us on a public taxi, all the while assuring us they understood what we wanted.

When we got to our first stop, Blackbeard’s Castle (which turned out to be closed for renovations at the time) and expressed our confusion about how this was supposed to work, the taxi driver got mad at us for not taking a private taxi, despite us telling him many times before we got on that we wanted to make multiple stops.

Since it wasn’t worth the fight, and since Blackbeard’s Castle was closed anyway, we got back on the taxi and went on to Magens Bay.

Beach Day at Magens Bay

Magens Bay, St Thomas, US Virgin Islands

Magens Bay has one mile of white sand beach, beautiful turquoise waters, and groves of shady palm trees. The entrance fee for the beach is currently $5 per person.

After a photo opp among the palm trees, we set up camp on an open spot on the beach. Magens Bay is definitely a popular tourist attraction, but it wasn’t terribly overcrowded while we were there. The further you move down the beach, the fewer people you’ll have around you as most people stay close to the bar and concessions.

What to do at Magens Bay

We spent a few hours playing in the water where we were able to watch fish swim around our ankles and sea turtles diving out in the distance. We took a quick break for a snack of pizza and then headed out into the water to admire the scenery of the amazingly blue water surrounded by lush green hills.

Magens Bay Park has a snack counter, bar, souvenir shop, showers, and bathrooms. You can also rent beach and lounge chairs, floats, snorkel gear, towels, lockers, paddleboards, and kayaks. Don’t forget to pack your waterproof digital camera so you can take pictures of the marine life while you splash around in these clear blue waters.

To get back to your port, you just have to tell one of the many taxi stand attendants which ship you’re going to, and they’ll wave you on down a line of other taxi attendants pointing you in the right direction until you eventually find an open taxi going to your port.

In all, we spent about 3 hours soaking up the sun on the beach before heading back to the cruise ship with plenty of time to spare.
