Visiting Dunguaire Castle in Ireland: Everything You Need to Know

Dunguaire Castle is one of the most photographed castles in Ireland — and once you see its storybook silhouette rising above Galway Bay, it’s easy to understand why. Located just outside the village of Kinvara in County Galway, this 16th-century castle is as famous for its literary history as it is for its stunning setting.

Dunguaire Castle played an important role in Ireland’s literary revival, hosting writers and poets who helped shape modern Irish culture. Today, it’s a popular stop along the Wild Atlantic Way, and you’ll find it included in many day tours (I visited as part of a Cliffs of Moher day trip).

If you’re exploring the west of Ireland, Dunguaire Castle is an easy and worthwhile stop along the way. Here’s everything you need to know about visiting Dunguaire Castle, including where it’s located, what you can see, and what to expect when you go.

Dunguaire Castle in Kinvara, Ireland, a stone castle on a small grassy peninsula surrounded by calm water, with a tall square tower, adjoining lower buildings, and a group of visitors gathered near the entrance under a cloudy sky.

Dunguaire Castle Overview

Dunguaire Castle is a well-preserved 16th-century tower house perched on the edge of Galway Bay near the village of Kinvara.

Best known for its picturesque waterfront setting and ties to Ireland’s literary revival, it’s one of the most photographed castles in western Ireland.

Dunguaire Castle History

The O’Hynes clan built Dunguaire Castle in 1520 on the shores of Galway Bay. The castle’s name derives from the Dun (or fort) of King Guaire, the legendary king of Connacht, an ancestor of the O’Hynes.

In 1924, Oliver St. John Gogarty, a famous surgeon and literary figure, bought the castle and restored the tower house and curtain walls. And since Gogarty was entrenched in the Celtic revival in Irish literature, the castle soon became a popular meeting place for Ireland’s literary elite. W.B. Yeats, Lady Gregory, George Bernard Shaw, Edward Martin, and J.M. Synge all met here.

Touring Dunguaire Castle

Until 2022, it was possible to tour Dunguaire Castle and attend a medieval-style banquet. However, a stalled transfer of ownership and funding needed for repairs have meant the castle’s interior has been closed to the public since 2022.

You can still access the castle grounds and see the exterior of the castle; there is a car park down the street.

Medieval Banquets

Formerly, the castle would host annual Medieval Banquets from April to October where you could enjoy a meal in the tradition of King Guaire and 16th century Ireland. There would be a four-course meal, fine wine and mead, stories, history, poetry, and other entertainment.

The medieval banquets have also been closed since 2022.

  1. This is a really cool looking castle. We were there off-season so it wasn’t open to go inside, but it was still neat to look at from the outside. I would love to return and see what it looks like from the inside. We had an easy time parking, but there were quite a few people there even though it wasn’t open.
