5 Delicious Restaurants in Macon, GA

Macon has a great food scene, especially if you’re into craft beers and burgers. Check out some of the top restaurants in Macon, Georgia.

Located about 1.5 hours south of Atlanta is a booming foodie scene in Macon. From soul food to craft beer, and from burgers to BBQ, you’re bound to find something delicious cooking up in Macon.

Best Restaurants in Macon

1. Ocmulgee Brewpub

Ocmulgee Brewpub makes their own craft beer that pairs perfectly with their gourmet burgers and huge helping of hand-cut fries.

Their burgers are ground fresh daily using premium cuts of Angus Beef. Their craft beer, like the Ocmulgee Cream Ale and the Citrus Soul, is all brewed in house.

I recommend the Clucker Club with grilled chicken, Swiss cheese, smoked bacon, lettuce, tomato, honey mustard, and ranch dressing. Their house-made sauces like the Truffle Aioli and Chipotle Mayonnaise are perfect for dipping your fries in.

2. The Rookery

The Rookery in Downtown Macon was voted Best Burger in town and featured in Garden and Gun’s “Guide to the South’s Best Burgers 2014”. Their menu also includes milkshakes, hand-cut fries, and extensive list of craft beers.

This is consistently my favorite place to eat in Macon. Whenever Kevin and I drive through Macon, we stop here for lunch or dinner.

I recommend the Rookery Burger if you’re in the mood for a classic cheeseburger. The Allman Burger is great if you like sauteed mushrooms. The Jimmy Carter Burger is a bit experimental with peanut butter and applewood smoked bacon. And the Walden Greenback Burger with a fried green tomato, green onions, applewood smoked bacon, fresh chevre, and sun-dried tomato remoulade is also a great choice.

3. Piedmont Brewery & Kitchen

Piedmont Brewery & Kitchen is a little bit a BBQ place, a little bit a burger joint, and a whole lot of brewpub. This restaurant has has handcrafted beer, modern smokehouse deliciousness, and a family-friendly arcade downstairs with old-school video games and arcade games.

They brew both familiar as well as cutting edge experimental styles of beer. You’ll find 12 beers on tap like their Satisfied Local Lager Beer and Sunshine Daydream Tropical IPA.

To eat, I recommend the Mac & Cheese, made with their house-made beer cheese, with the Smoked Chicken.

4. H&H Soul Food Restaurant

Founders of H&H Restaurant, Inez Hill and Louise Hudson, were close friends with the Allman Brothers Band. It’s that friendship and the delicious soul food that has made this Macon restaurant famous.

This iconic restaurant serves up delicious Southern soul food for breakfast and lunch. Choose from a menu of biscuits, waffles, pancakes, and signature breakfast items.

I recommend the Kirk’s Mystic Gravy Biscuits, an open-face biscuit topped with sausage gravy and a side of bacon or sausage.

5. Dovetail

Upstairs above The Rookery is Dovetail, a restaurant that serves uniquely crafted, Southern cuisine with dishes inspired by seasonal availability and traditional southern fare.

Dovetail has a completely different vibe than The Rookery, with a rustic and sophisticated dining room, fresh takes on your favorite Southern dishes, and top-notch cocktails.

I recommend the Put-Ups to start (pimento cheese, bacon marmalade, chickpea and pickled carrot hummus, and smoked trout dip), and the Beef Tenderloin Filet for dinner. To drink, you can’t go wrong with the Folklore.
