Steamboat Grand Review: Our Winter Stay in Steamboat Springs

The Steamboat Grand made our winter trip to Steamboat Springs incredibly easy from start to finish. Between the mountain views, cozy fireplaces, and location right by Steamboat Ski Resort, the hotel was the perfect home base for five days of skiing and snowy adventures.

When we were planning our trip, we wanted somewhere with a snowy lodge feel, easy access to the slopes, and plenty of other winter activities. We couldn’t get much better than the Steamboat Grand! We stayed in a spacious 3-bedroom condo with our family of five adults, and as beginner skiers, we especially appreciated having ski rentals right at the hotel, plus a free shuttle for getting into Downtown Steamboat Springs.

If you’re considering a stay here, my Steamboat Grand review covers what our condo was like, the amenities we used, what worked well for our winter trip, and whether I think the hotel is worth booking.

Staying at the Steamboat Grand: Review

A decorative elk sculpture stands on a wooden table in front of a large window overlooking a snowy mountain town at the Steamboat Grand in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Snow covered rooftops, evergreen trees, and rolling mountains stretch across the view beneath a cloudy winter sky.

The Steamboat Grand offers a variety of accommodations, from standard hotel rooms to spacious condos with multiple bedrooms, kitchens, and living areas. It’s a great choice for families and groups looking for a comfortable home base during a Steamboat Springs vacation.

Rooms and Accommodations at the Steamboat Grand

The hotel is huge with 328 guest rooms that include Double Queen and Deluxe King hotel rooms (your standard hotel room with a mini fridge and coffee maker), Studios with a kitchenette, Condos with 1, 2, 3, and 4 bedrooms, and Penthouses with 3, 4, and 5 bedrooms.

Our 3-Bedroom Condo

We stayed in a 3-bedroom, 3-bathroom condo with our family of 5 adults. The unit was spread across 2 levels, with a full kitchen, dining area, and living room downstairs.

The first floor had a primary king bedroom with an ensuite bathroom featuring a stand-up shower and jetted tub. There was also a queen bedroom with its own bathroom and a tub/shower combo.

Upstairs, there was another sitting area and a second king bedroom with an ensuite bathroom featuring a tub/shower combo.

We loved being able to all stay in the same unit, rather than be spread out across three different hotel rooms. We didn’t make much use of the kitchen, as we planned on eating around town for our meals, but we did enjoy the large amount of space the dining room and living room gave us to hang out while we ate breakfast from the market downstairs.

My other favorite part for our winter trip were the fireplaces. There was a fireplace in the living room and one in each king bedroom. Having these on made the whole condo feel so cozy.

And the views from the picture windows were stunning. We loved looking out at the snowy mountains from the living room and our bedrooms. There was even a balcony off the primary bedroom, though it was a little chilly for sitting outside too long.

Amenities at the Steamboat Grand

The Steamboat Grand is full of great amenities that made our vacation even better.

There’s an 85,000 gallon heated outdoor pool, plus two hot tubs, so you can still enjoy a swim even in winter. It’s lit up at night with colorful lights, so it was a beautiful place to relax after a day of winter fun.

They have a health club with fitness machines, free weights, and locker rooms with a sauna and steam room.

We made use of their ski valet service, and their onsite ski rentals, to help us out as beginner skiers getting our gear sorted and to the base of the slopes. We also made use of their complimentary shuttle that takes you into Downtown Steamboat Springs.

Dining at the Steamboat Grand

The Steamboat Grand has three different onsite dining options: the Crooked Antler, the Grand Market, and the Poolside Bistro.

We got breakfast from the Grand Market daily, which has groceries, grab-and-go prepared items, and snacks as well as a counter serving fresh coffee, a breakfast menu of breakfast sandwiches and burritos, and a lunch menu of sandwiches, paninis, flatbreads, and pizza. We got their pastries and coffee. There’s a seating area, but we just took our breakfast back to our condo.

We also ate dinner at the Crooked Antler. This sit-down restaurant with a refined lodge-like setting serves comfort food for happy hour, dinner, and the late-night bar scene. This was a really delicious dinner after a day of skiing, with filling entrees like the Chicken Fried Chicken and the High Country Dip sandwich.

We didn’t get a chance to try the Poolside Bistro, but they serve casual fare, cocktails, and light bites. The bistro is only available to guests of the Grand.

Skiing at the Steamboat Grand

One of the biggest perks of staying at the Steamboat Grand, especially as beginner skiers, was how easy they made it to get ready for a day on the slopes.

We were able to book our private ski lessons through Steamboat Ski Resort‘s Snowsports School, arrange our lift tickets, and rent equipment through the ski shop located right inside the hotel. Having everything in one place made our ski day much easier.

We rented beginner-friendly ski equipment that included skis, boots, and poles. The rental shop fitted us for the right size boots, helmets, and ski lengths. Helmets are included for skiers 17 and under, but we had to rent ours separately as adults. We brought our own ski clothing, though jackets and pants are available to rent separately at other ski shops around Steamboat.

After getting fitted, we took our boots and helmets back to our condo, while our skis and poles were delivered to the base of the mountain for us. This was especially convenient because we didn’t have to carry all our equipment around or worry about transporting it to the slopes. By the time our ski lesson started the next morning, we had everything sorted and were ready to go!

You can read more about our beginner ski lesson and how we spent the rest of our winter vacation in my 5 Days in Steamboat Springs Winter Itinerary.

Where Is the Steamboat Grand Located?

A covered terrace at the Steamboat Grand in Steamboat Springs, Colorado frames a snowy ski resort and mountain slopes in the distance. Evergreen trees and lodge buildings fill the valley below, including a tall brick building marked with a large "S" emblem.

The Steamboat Grand is located at the base of Steamboat Ski Resort, just across the street from Steamboat Square. It’s a convenient location for skiing, with easy access to the Steamboat Gondola, Wild Blue Gondola, ski rentals, restaurants, and shops. We loved being able to walk over to the Square for meals, shopping, and ice skating.

The hotel is about a 40-minute drive from Yampa Valley Regional Airport (HDN) in nearby Hayden, Colorado. We booked a shared Storm Mountain Express shuttle to the Steamboat Grand as an easy way to get from the airport to the hotel without having to rent a car (or drive in the snow).

Getting Around Steamboat Springs From the Hotel

We didn’t rent a car during our five days in Steamboat Springs, and we didn’t need one! Between the hotel’s location and the available shuttles, we had no trouble getting to all our winter activities.

The Steamboat Grand offers a free shuttle into Downtown Steamboat Springs, which we used several times for dinner and shopping. We could walk to Steamboat Square for skiing, dining, shopping, and ice skating. Our snowmobiling adventure at Saddleback Ranch and our visit to Strawberry Park Hot Springs also included shuttle transportation with pickup at our hotel.

I’d recommend skipping the rental car if you’re staying at the Steamboat Grand and planning a similar winter itinerary. It saved us the hassle of driving in snowy conditions, and we were still able to explore everything we wanted to see.
