8 Delicious Restaurants in Garmisch-Partenkirchen

Garmisch-Partenkirchen may be best known for its mountain scenery and skiing, but we also ate really well while we were there. We found everything from cozy Bavarian taverns and Italian trattorias to restaurants high in the Alps.

During our Christmas trip, we had a special holiday dinner at our hotel, homemade pizza at a rustic ski hut, and hot drinks on the Zugspitze after playing in the snow.

If you’re wondering where to eat in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, these are the restaurants we tried during our trip and the ones I’d recommend adding to your plans.

Elegant dish featuring dark meat topped with herbs and crumbled cheese, surrounded by rich brown sauce, mushrooms, and crispy garnish on a white plate from Joseph Naus Stub'n restaurant at Hotel Zugspitze in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.

Where to Eat in Garmisch-Partenkirchen

1. Joseph Naus Stub’n

Bavarian, European

Located inside Hotel Zugspitze, Joseph Naus Stub’n serves regional Bavarian cuisine with an emphasis on fresh, locally sourced ingredients. The restaurant earned Michelin Bib Gourmand recognition for its quality cooking and good value, making it a great choice for a special occasion.

We stayed at Hotel Zugspitze over the holidays, and the restaurant hosted a special four-course Christmas Eve dinner. Our meal included soup, fish, veal, and a meringue dessert.

The menu was mostly in German, so I honestly couldn’t tell you exactly what each dish was, but everything was delicious! It was a memorable way to spend Christmas Eve.

2. La Toscana

Italian, Pasta, Pizza

Plate of spaghetti topped with grated cheese, herbs, and a fresh basil leaf, surrounded by a red tablecloth and glasses at La Toscana in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.

If you’re craving Italian food in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, La Toscana is a great place to get your pasta and pizza fix. This Italian restaurant serves a variety of Tuscan favorites, making it a nice change of pace from all the traditional Bavarian food.

We tried the Pizza Margherita, Spaghetti La Toscana, and Risotto Milanese. The Spaghetti La Toscana was a delicious classic pomodoro pasta, while the Risotto Milanese came with strips of beef in a saffron sauce. I’d definitely recommend the spaghetti if you’re in the mood for a good pasta dish!

3. Gasthaus zur Schranne

Bavarian, Alpine Cuisine

A plate of sliced roast pork with crispy skin, served with two dumplings topped with herbs, all drizzled with rich gravy, on a wooden table from Gasthaus zur Schranne in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.

For a taste of traditional Bavarian cuisine, Gasthaus zur Schranne was an obvious choice. This cozy German restaurant is housed in a restored 19th-century inn. With its historic setting and hearty Alpine dishes, it’s a great place to experience the local food culture in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

We ordered the Wiener Schnitzel, goulash made with Bavarian ox, and homemade cheese spaetzle (Käsespätzle). The Wiener Schnitzel was some of the best we’ve ever had! If you’re looking to try a traditional Alpine dish, this is definitely what I’d recommend ordering.

4. Alte Druckerei

Spanish Tapas, Steaks

A pan of vibrant paella filled with yellow rice, shrimp, mussels, and red peppers, topped with a lemon wedge, on a wooden table from Alte Druckerei in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.

Alte Druckerei brings a taste of Spain to Garmisch-Partenkirchen with its Spanish-inspired menu and chic farmhouse atmosphere. It’s a great spot for sharing a variety of small plates tapas-style, but they also serve some impressive steaks.

I recommend the Paella Española, a Spanish paella with shrimp and seafood, or the T-bone steak. It’s a great choice if you’re in the mood for something different from traditional Bavarian cuisine, especially if you enjoy seafood or a good steak!

5. Ristorante Pizzeria Trattoria Calabrese

Pizza, Pasta

A plate of creamy spaghetti carbonara topped with bacon and garnished with parsley from Ristorante Pizzeria Trattoria Calabrese in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. A glass of cola is visible in the background on a stylish table setting.

Ristorante Pizzeria Trattoria Calabrese is a family-run trattoria that brings the flavors of Calabria, a region in southern Italy, to the Bavarian Alps, with traditional pasta dishes, pizza, and regional specialties.

We ordered the Spaghetti Carbonara, Tortellini Panna e Prosciutto, and Calabrese pizza. I really enjoyed the flavor of the carbonara, but it was so rich and heavy that I couldn’t finish my dinner! If you love a hearty pasta dish, though, it might be right up your alley.

6. Drehmöser 9

Pizza, Bavarian

Rectangular pizza with melted cheese, ham, mushrooms, and basil on a white plate at Drehmöser 9 restaurant at Garmisch-Classic in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. A rustic wooden table and wine glasses are visible in the background.

Located at the Garmisch-Classic ski area, Drehmöser 9 is a cozy mountain restaurant that’s only open during the winter season. This rustic ski hut has a fire pit in the middle, upstairs seating, and a long bar, making it a great place to warm up and relax after a morning on the slopes.

We stopped here for lunch during our skiing adventure and had to order their homemade pizza, since we’d been “pizza-ing” our way down the beginner slopes all morning! It’s good spot to take a break from skiing and enjoy a mountain lunch to refuel for more winter fun.

7. Panorama 2962

European

A plate of currywurst with fries is on a black tray, topped with ketchup and herbs from Panorama 2962 restaurant at the Zugspitze summit in Germany. A glass of dark soda is beside it, with forks and napkins nearby.

Named for the mountain’s height of 2,962 meters, Panorama 2962 is a cafeteria-style restaurant at the Zugspitze summit, right by the cable car top station. The menu offers a mix of Alpine and European favorites.

The real draw is the view from the restaurant’s large picture windows, which overlook the surrounding Alps on a clear day. Unfortunately, we visited during a snowstorm, so we didn’t get those spectacular views. But it was still a nice place to warm up and grab lunch at the top of Germany’s highest mountain.

We ordered a variety of dishes, from currywurst to spaghetti, salad to goulash, so there’s something for everyone, even if you’re dining with picky eaters.

8. Gletscher 2600

Vegetarian Mediterranean

Located on the Zugspitze Glacier, Gletscher 2600 is a mountain restaurant inside a circular glass pavilion with panoramic views of the glacier and surrounding Alpine peaks. The restaurant serves a fully vegetarian menu featuring Mediterranean-inspired dishes and Alpine specialties, with indoor seating and an outdoor sundeck.

We stopped here for hot drinks to warm up after our sledding adventure, so I can’t speak to the food, but I can recommend stopping in for a drink! We tried the Glühwein Rot (mulled red wine). We also ordered hot chocolate with a shot of rum, but agreed that the rum overpowered the chocolate. Next time, we’d stick with regular hot chocolate!
