During our cruise, our first port of call was Nassau, Bahamas where we disembarked for a day spent at the Atlantis, Bahamas resort’s Aquaventure water park.
Arriving in Nassau, Bahamas
On the first full day of our Royal Caribbean cruise, after a rocky night at sea, we were up early for a day of adventure in the Bahamas. We had booked our Atlantis excursion through the cruise line; we waited in the Opal Theater to be led to our tour.
Our ship was a little late getting into port since we’d had such a windy night of travel, but the crew assured us we would get our full excursion time.
There was a lot of disorganization for this part, but after half an hour waiting on a ship and an hour of standing waiting outside, we were finally corralled through the port crowd and loaded onto buses to head to Atlantis.
Atlantis, Paradise Island Bahamas
Atlantis is an extravagant vacation resort in the Bahamas. You’ll recognize it by its iconic two towers connected by a bridge suite (which costs $25,000 per night).
The resort is home to the world’s largest open-air marine habitat. It also has a 141-acre water park called Aquaventure, 11 pools, 5 miles of beaches, an ocean-front golf course, and a casino.
As they led us to the water park, they made sure to give us a tour of the designer shopping in the lobby and the casino, tempting visitors to make their next trip a stay at Atlantis.
Is there a more direct path to the water park? Maybe, but this resort is like a huge maze and I’d never be able to find another way out.
The Atlantean-themed Aquaventure water park has high-speed water slides, a mile-long rapid river, a kids’ area, and 11 swimming pools all housed in a tropical environment.
The water slides descend from the Mayan Temple and the Power Tower, huge towers that provide not only great heights for the slides but also great views out across the island and the sea. The pools are decorated with crumbling columns and unique rock formations, giving off the feel of really being in a lost city.
Exploring the Water Park
Since Kevin and I were vacationing with a couple friends, we split up with the men taking off for the water slides. I gave them instruction to report back to me whether it was likely my bathing suit would safely stay on while riding any of the slides.
Meanwhile, we women hopped on the river rapids ride, relaxed in the hot tub, braved the cold pools, found a cove hidden behind a waterfall, and frolicked on the beach.
We considered going to find the lazy river, but after seeing it was all the way on the other side of the park, we decided against it for fear we wouldn’t be able to find our way back again.
The men, however, knowing we had wanted a lazy river, decided to wander all through the park looking for us at the lazy river, and they came back with tales of seeing stingray and water park kitties.
We finally met up with the men again by chance on the river rapids ride where they were searching for the much sought-after single tube to take on one of the slides.
I joined Kevin on a double tube for the water slide. (This was probably for the best because they had a hard time finding single tubes).
Then Kevin took me to try one non-tube slide, one where you race each other to the bottom. Kevin got to the bottom first, of course, but I’m counting a win for not losing my bathing suit.
Not wanting to be late for the all-aboard, we decided it was close enough to time to head back. We made our way through the resort maze again. We saw one last kitty on our way out, so we ended our fun day on a high note.
