Coco Plum Island Resort Review: Where to Stay in Belize

Coco Plum Island Resort Overwater Docks

Where do you want to spend your paradise vacation in Belize? If you’re looking for a private getaway full of luxury and relaxation, then I highly recommend staying at Coco Plum Island Resort! There’s a reason Coco Plum has been named one of the top resorts in Belize and a top romantic getaway in the world.

For our honeymoon in Belize, Kevin and I wanted romantic and luxurious, but we also wanted to feel like we were getting our money’s worth. When I found Coco Plum Island Resort, I was blown away! We had to postpone our honeymoon plans in 2020 due to the pandemic, so this trip has been over a year in the making, and we couldn’t wait to finally experience the resort for ourselves.

About Coco Plum Island Resort

Coco Plum Island Resort Hammock

Coco Plum Island Resort is its own private island off the coast of Dangriga, Belize. It’s an all-inclusive, adults-only luxury resort with only 18 private, ocean-front cabanas for an ultimate paradise getaway.

Not only does the resort offer ultimate relaxation, it also offers complete packages so that you can have adventures off the island without having to worry about any of the planning.

Coco Plum Island Resort has been named a Top Hotel for Romance in the world, a Top Small Hotel in the 2022 Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice Best of the Best Awards. And in 2020 they were named the most romantic hotel in the world.

They were a Condé Nast Johansens Awards for Excellence award finalist in 2021 and a winner in 2019, 2020, 2022, and 2023.

After having stayed at Coco Plum, I can confirm that they deserve all the awards.

Getting to the Resort

Welcome to Belize sign at airport

Since Coco Plum Island Resort is on its own private island, getting there is a little complex. But the resort arranges everything for you, so you don’t have to worry!

First, you’ll fly into Belize City (Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport). You’ll disembark your plane, go through border control, grab your checked luggage, go through customs, and exit into the departures terminal with airline counters.

You’ll then go to the counter for Maya Island Air. It’s such a small flight that you’ll just need to give them your name and they’ll check you off a list and take your checked bags before sending you on your way to security.

Once through security, you’ll arrive in the departures lounge. Head all the way to the end of the terminal to find Maya Island Air boarding. The plane to Dangriga is tiny and only holds about 15 people, including the pilot. They’ll board you arranged based on weight distribution, and then it’s only a 15 minute flight to Dangriga.

Maya Air Plane

When you land in Dangriga, you’ll head into the tiny airport building to find a Coco Plum representative. Hand them your luggage tags and they’ll head outside to collect your bags while you board the van to the resort.

It’s about a 15 minute drive to the docks where you’ll then board a boat. The boat ride to the island is about 30 minutes to the island. You’ll be in paradise in no time!

Domestic air transportation is included in all the packages.

Enjoying Your Stay at Coco Plum Island Resort

Private Island Experience

Coco Plum Island Resort

The island is a 16 acre paradise covered in white sand and surrounded by the clearest blue water I’ve ever seen. You have full run of the island. You can go wherever you want and do whatever you please (within reason, of course).

There is beach all around you. The resort had to install a seawall after a bad hurricane to keep the island from eroding away. This makes it a little harder to just walk into the water from anywhere, but there are plenty of ladders for you to use getting in.

Coco Plum Island Resort Overwater Hammock

There are different lounge areas all around the island. From daybeds to hammocks to traditional lounge chairs, there’s no shortage of comfy seating. By far the most popular spot to chill out are the three overwater cabanas by the bar. They offer comfortable lounge chairs, unique overwater hammocks, water access, and shade, so it’s no wonder everyone loves them!

On the other end of the island, you’ll find a couple secluded beaches. These spots really make you feel like you’re on your own on a private island.

The Cabana

Coco Plum Island Resort Cabana

There are 18 colorful private, beach-front cabanas, including 1 three-story, two-bedroom overwater bungalow. Each cabana comes with a porch and some seating like comfortable chairs and hammocks so you can enjoy the beach views.

All the cabanas are spaced out from each other, so you have plenty of privacy. You don’t even get a key to your room; the only people on the island are staff and guests, so there’s no need to worry about locking up.

Cabanas range from standard to premium, with more space and amenities in the premium rooms. We stuck with a standard, which had a king bed, a couple arm chairs, a breakfast table for two, a minifridge, and a bathroom with a large open shower. Each room comes with a 5 gallon jug of drinking water and a cooler in case you want to picnic on the beach.

Food & Drinks

Dessert at Coco Plum Island Resort

The best part about an all-inclusive resort? The food and drinks are included! And with Coco Plum Island Resort, it’s no different.

On most packages, all local alcoholic drinks are included. That means anything made with non-imported liquor. Don’t worry, they have a menu reminding you what’s included and listing their local cocktails; Kevin made it through the entire list of local cocktails. Every day there’s a Happy Hour where non-local drinks are half-priced. This is the best time to order that Mudslide!

The bar is the hub of all the action at Coco Plum. It’s where you get your drinks, where you get bar snacks, where you can mingle, and where you get the friendliest bartenders in the world!

For breakfast, lunch, and dinner, you’ll dine outside by the water as long as the weather is nice. You can also choose to dine inside.

The food at Coco Plum is amazing. For breakfast and lunch, they’ll take your order when you arrive. For dinner, they’ll take your order during lunch. There are typically 2-3 options, and you can make substitutions as needed. Their portions are pretty big, but you can ask for seconds.

They have a great range of dishes. There’s plenty of fish, shrimp, and other seafood. You’ll try Belizean favorites, like stewed chicken, rice and beans, and ceviche. They also offer steak, pasta, lamb, quesadillas, and more. And their desserts are delectable!

Head to the bar for complimentary snacks during Happy Hour. These appetizers range from empanadas to sliders to nachos.

For the candlelit dinner, they went all out! Our table was set with napkins in the shapes of hearts and swans, flower petals, and soft lighting. Our dinner came served with fruit and vegetable decorations in the shape of flowers and birds.

Activities On and Off the Island

Snorkeling the Belize Barrier Reef

There is no shortage of things to do on Coco Plum, and off the island as well. Spending your days lounging around drinking fruity cocktails is a great way to spend your day, but if you’re looking for a little more activity then there’s plenty to do.

On Coco Plum, you have full access to their swimming pool, kayaks, paddleboards, snorkeling gear, games, and more. Take a kayak out for a spin around the island, look for the manatee that swims near the overwater docks, or even head out around one of the neighboring islands.

Kayaking in Belize

Sundays are Fundays on the island, which means everyone can compete in games for prizes. I won the limbo contest and got a free t-shirt! You can also play games like horseshoes and cornhole anytime, and even challenge some of the bar staff to a cornhole match.

They even have a library of books and board games you can borrow if you forgot something to read or want to spend a quiet day in.

And massages are a must! They have both indoor rooms and an outdoor massage station. I got pampered with a massage on the outdoor spa deck, breathing in the fresh ocean air and listening to the waves crash against the shore.

Off the island, Coco Plum offers guided snorkeling tours, fishing, diving, and mainland tours. Snorkeling takes you out to different parts of the Belize Barrier Reef, the second largest living barrier reef in the world. For mainland tours, you have a choice of spending a day exploring Maya ruins at Xunantunich, a day of cave tubing and ziplining, or a day at the zoo.

Final Thoughts

We certainly got all that we were looking for with Coco Plum. It has the romance, it has the luxury, it has the privacy. And it was well worth the high price tag, especially for splurging on our honeymoon.

We’re very tempted to visit again!
