Top Things to Do in Sitka
Sitka, Alaska is the perfect place, with breathtaking views, unique wildlife, and a culture unlike any other. Just one day in this incredible town can provide lifelong memories and experiences.
Take a Whale and Wildlife Cruise
A whale watching cruise is one of the best things to do in Sitka, especially during the summer.
You have the opportunity to see grey whales, orcas, minke whales, and humpback whales here in the Sitka Sound. On our whale watching tour, we a humpback breaching and putting on a show for us! I wasn’t quick enough to get any pictures, though.
A boat trip is also a great way to see other marine wildlife. On our cruise, we saw otters, seals, sea lions, and bald eagles in addition to the whale.
See Bears at the Fortress of the Bear
The Fortress of the Bear is a bear sanctuary that rescues orphaned Alaska bear cubs. Since Alaska laws don’t allow rescued bears to be released back into the wild, the Fortress of the Bear is saving these cubs from being euthanized.
At the Fortress of the Bear, there are 5 brown bears and 3 black bears. They have a 0.75-acrea habitat that is filled with trees, swimming pools, logs and stumps, and plenty of toys to play with.
The bears are very active and enjoy playing with each other and asking their keepers for more food — they’ve even learned signed language for “more”!
Visit the Alaska Raptor Center
The Alaska Raptor Center is a rehabilitation center that provides treatment for injured birds. Their goal is to get these raptors healthy enough to re-enter the wild, and each year they help more than 200 birds.
At their 17-acre sanctuary, you can see bald eagles, golden eagles, hawks, and owls. You get to see inside their flight-training center where the raptors regain their strength.
You’ll also get to meet one of their “Raptors-in-Residence”, a bird that is not able to return to the wild. Educational specialists are able to answer questions and tell you facts about these majestic creatures.
