9 Romantic Things to Do in Thomson, GA for Couples

Thomson makes a surprisingly fun couples getaway when you want something a little different from the usual romantic weekend. You can stay by the lake, cuddle Highland Cows, wander a lavender farm, and still have plenty of time for cozy meals and easy dates downtown.

Kevin and I spent a romantic weekend in Thomson together, and some of our favorite moments were the simple ones: watching the sunset over Clarks Hill Lake, antique shopping with no real agenda, sharing milkshakes, and hanging out with farm animals. We also found some more memorable date ideas, like staying in an A-frame cabin on the lake and spending time at Crawford’s Double O Farm.

If you’re planning a couples getaway, these are my favorite romantic things to do in Thomson, GA for a weekend that feels relaxed, a little quirky, and actually fun.

A special thanks to Visit Thomson, GA for hosting us for a romantic weekend in Thomson! As always, all opinions are my own.

A calm Clarks Hill Lake stretches between wooded shorelines at sunset, with soft orange light glowing beneath a cloudy sky and reflecting across the water. Covered boat docks sit along both sides of the quiet shoreline.

Things to Do in Thomson for Couples

1. Stay in a Romantic A-Frame Cabin on Clarks Hill Lake

Kevin and I stayed in an A-frame cabin overlooking Clarks Hill Lake on one of our Thomson trips, and it was the perfect stay for a couples getaway. Instead of just heading back to a standard hotel at the end of the day, we got a scenic drive out in the country and a remote cabin for quiet nights in.

The lake views really made this place romantic, especially at sunset. We could relax by the water on our private dock or by the fire pit and enjoy the serenity of the lake. And when the sun went down, the sunsets were immaculate. We enjoyed a glass of our favorite Lake Day wine from Paulk Vineyards on the deck, with a backdrop of a pink and orange sunset that perfectly matched the rosé.

The cabin itself can fit a much larger party, with three bedrooms and two full bathrooms, but it didn’t feel cavernous with just two people. We slept in the king-sized bed upstairs with the superior shower, played games made for two, and had a dinner of leftovers from Deep South Cheese & Grill at the large dining room table.

On our first night, we paired our stay with dinner and drinks at Williemacs at Buoy 71, which also overlooks Clarks Hill Lake, and turned the whole evening into a waterfront date before heading back to the cabin.

2. Go Glamping Together on a Highland Cow Farm

For one of my Thomson weekends, I stayed at Crawford’s Double O Farm, a 32-acre family-owned farm filled with Scottish Highland Cows, alpacas, llamas, goats, and Valais Sheep.

It was one of the most unique stays I’ve had in Thomson. Kevin and I didn’t get to stay there together since my first visit was a solo trip, and they’ve since removed the luxury RV I stayed in. But my general experience of staying on the farm is the same, plus we stop by to take a look inside their yurts.

The farm has glamping yurts set right in the pasture, including the Highland Cow-themed Cuddly Cow Yurt and the pink, disco-inspired Dolly’s Disco Yurt. You still get the comforts of a queen-sized bed, mini fridge, seating, and air conditioning, but the overall stay is much more rustic than a hotel or the A-frame cabin.

My favorite part was getting to spend so much time around the animals. You can step outside and have them wandering nearby, and there are extra experiences you can add to your stay like bottle-feeding babies, painting sessions, games with goats, and even a farm animal milk-and-cookies delivery.

Those little extras are what make this work so well as a couples stay. They really add to the experience, and you’re not just booking a tent on a farm.

Book your stay at Crawford’s Double O Farm in the Cuddly Cow Yurt here or in Dolly’s Disco Yurt here.

3. Cuddle Highland Cows at the Cowabunga Cafe Experience

Kevin and I went to Crawford’s Double O Farm for the Cowabunga Cafe experience so we could spend some time with the animals even though we weren’t staying overnight on this trip.

If you’re an animal-loving couple, this is easily one of the cutest date ideas in Thomson.

We spent an hour in the pasture feeding and hanging out with the Highland Cows, sheep, goats, and llamas. I even got to bottle-feed a baby Highland Cow! Once the animals realized we had food, things got a little chaotic, especially since we had the pasture mostly to ourselves, but that was part of the fun.

We also had lemonade and baked treats while we were there, though the animals were very interested in whatever we were eating too. It definitely wasn’t a quiet little coffee date, but it certainly was a memorable one.

The Cowabunga Cafe is great for couples who want the Highland Cow experience but aren’t really into an overnight glamping stay. You still get to spend plenty of time together in the pasture and get up close with the animals.

4. Watch the Sunset Over the Water at Williemacs

On our first night at the A-frame cabin, Kevin and I had dinner at Williemacs at Buoy 71, a waterfront restaurant and bar at Raysville Marina on Clarks Hill Lake.

You can dine inside or outside, but either way you’ll have views out over the water. We did choose to dine inside, because the Georgia summer is no joke, so we got to listen to the live musician playing that night.

This is the Thomson restaurant I’d pick for a romantic dinner because of the setting. We timed our meal around sunset, ordered drinks, and got to watch the light change over the lake while we ate. With dinner, drinks, live music, and a sunset, this was a perfect date night.

I recommend ordering the Ribeye since it’s a special date night. To drink, I went with the Mermaid Tail, which was a beautifully green coconut cocktail that matched the glittering lake water.

5. Tour White Hills Farm and Wander Through the Lavender

Kevin and I visited White Hills Farm in nearby Dearing for a quiet afternoon surrounded by herbs, flowers, and tons of lavender products. It’s only about a 15-minute drive from Downtown Thomson, so it’s an easy date to work into a couples weekend.

The most romantic time to visit is during lavender season in June and July, when the fields are blooming purple and you can even pick some lavender yourselves. I still haven’t managed to visit during peak season, but we’ve been in the late summer when a few varieties were still hanging on.

Even outside of lavender season, there’s plenty to do. You can tour the farm; shop for lavender bath products, teas, essential oils, and culinary lavender; or check the calendar for experiences like baking classes, high tea, yoga, and making your own spa-grade beauty products. On our last visit, Kevin and I made a little lavender sachet to take home.

This is a great place to find some local products to bring back from the trip. We picked up Lavender Calamint Rooibos Tea and Culinary Lavender, and we tried one of the farm’s lavender recipes together when we got home.

6. Plan a Downtown Thomson Shopping Date

A crowded antiques and gift shop display in Thomson, Georgia is filled with colorful jewelry, silk scarves, decorative plates, baskets, mirrors, pillows, and vintage home decor. Necklace stands and small ceramic pieces fill the foreground, while layered shelves and wall displays create an eclectic treasure hunt feel.

Kevin and I love antique shopping together, so spending time browsing the shops in Thomson was an easy date for us. Most of the stores are close enough together in downtown that you walk between them all.

We both managed to bring home some great finds on our last trip. I found a vintage Nancy Drew book for my collection at Aunt Tique & Uncle Junk’s, while Kevin walked out of Alleycats This & That with an armful of retired Lego sets for a great price.

There are plenty of other great local stores, too. I like MariBeth’s Books for new and used books and local McDuffie authors, The Saturday Market for antiques, vintage finds, and local jams and sauces, and Sweet Annie’s and Mane Vault for boutique shopping.

This is what we like to call a “dilly-dally date” where we have no agenda and no timeframe. We just get to wander the shops and see what catches our eye. Bonus points for grabbing a sweet treat from The Caffeinated Heifer while you browse.

7. Have a Cozy Breakfast Date at Camellia City Cafe

We started one of our Thomson mornings at Camellia City Cafe, and it’s perfect for a slow, cozy breakfast date. The dining room has that homey Southern feel with flower patterned table cloths, fresh-cut flowers, and genuinely friendly people who want to know what you’re in town for, where you’re from, and what you’re doing with your day.

The whole place feels more like you’re sitting down to breakfast at someone’s house than eating at a restaurant.

We’ve tried both the regular menu and the Saturday breakfast buffet. If you’re a big breakfast person, the buffet gives you plenty to sample. I’m not much of a breakfast eater, though, so I preferred ordering the French Toast from the menu.

This breakfast date is great to pair with a morning of wandering Downtown Thomson. You can take your time at breakfast, then head out for a day of shopping, taking the self-guided Downtown Thomson Walking Tour, or following the public artworks along McTell’s 12 String Strut.

8. Stop for Coffee or Ice Cream at The Caffeinated Heifer

Two creamy blended milkshake drinks in clear cups sit on a wooden counter at The Caffeinated Heifer in Thomson, Georgia, with plush Highland cows and a decorative cow figure behind them. Both cups display a logo reading "THE CAFFEINATED HEIFER" and "THOMSON, GA", while the darker drink has "Majestic Milkshake" handwritten near the top.

We stopped at The Caffeinated Heifer for a sweet little date while we were exploring Downtown Thomson.

It’s Thomson’s local coffee shop, but they also serve smoothies, ice cream, milkshakes, pastries, and grab-and-go breakfast sandwiches, so you’ve got plenty of options depending on what kind of treat you’re in the mood for.

We went with milkshakes. Kevin ordered one with a chocolate and caramel ice cream base, while I chose chocolate and coffee. We sat together in the shop’s window area, cooling down from the summer heat.

The Caffeinated Heifer hosts a lot of community events, and when we visited, they were having an ’80s-themed ice cream social with trivia, karaoke, and a DJ. It was fun sitting near the counter and listening in on the ’80s trivia and seeing how many we could get right.

9. Have an Italian Lunch Date at Fernanda’s Grill & Pizzeria

A baked spaghetti dish at Fernanda's Grill & Pizzeria in Thomson, Georgia, is covered with bubbling, browned melted cheese in an oval casserole dish, with several slices of garlic bread arranged beside it. The cheesy pasta and toast are served together on a large white plate.

Fernanda’s Grill & Pizzeria is an easy lunch date in Downtown Thomson. It’s the local go-to for Italian comfort food, so this is where I’d head when you want something cozy and casual.

The menu has all the classics, including pizza, pasta, calzones, strombolis, and hot and cold subs. I’m a fan of the Baked Spaghetti, which came perfectly baked with plenty of melted mozzarella on top. Locals also rave about the specialty pizzas, so sharing a pizza would be a super cute date option.

Fernanda’s is right in Downtown Thomson, so you can work lunch into whatever else you have planned around town. It’s not necessarily scenic or special-occasion feeling, but sometimes a good date is simply sharing a big cheesy pizza together.
