4. Learn African-American History at the A.L. Lewis Museum

Experience the history of American Beach, an African American resort community established in 1935, at the A.L. Lewis Museum (formerly called the American Beach Museum). You’ll learn all about MaVynee Oshun Betsch, “The Beach Lady,” great-granddaughter of American Beach founder A. L. Lewis; the history of the area during the Civil War and black beach communities in the Jim Crow era; and see personal artifacts from community residents.
