Shiba Park Hotel Review: Library Hotel in Tokyo

If you’re a book-lover, I’ve found the perfect place for you to stay in Tokyo — Shiba Park Hotel! This quiet library-inspired hotel has a huge collection of books on are and culture that you can borrow during your stay.

With a grand bookcase staircase in the lobby, a cozy library lounge, spacious rooms, and low-key location in Tokyo’s business district, Shiba Park Hotel is an excellent 4-star stay in Tokyo that doesn’t come with an outlandish price tag.

We chose this hotel for one of our Tokyo stays because of its proximity to Tokyo Tower and its king-sized beds (a rare treat in Tokyo for us long-legged folks!). We really enjoyed our stay, and I highly recommend it for fellow bookworms. Here’s my full review of Shiba Park Hotel and what you can expect during your stay.

Shiba Park Hotel Review

Shiba Park Hotel opened in 1948 and got a whole new makeover in 2020 to become a library hotel with 1,500 books on Japanese art and culture.

The hotel has large rooms (for Tokyo) that are comfortable and inviting. Plus, it sits on a quiet street near Tokyo Tower and within walking distance of three train stations.

The Guest Room

The biggest draw for us was that Shiba Park Hotel offered king-sized beds in their standard rooms, not just at their luxury levels, which is a rare find in Tokyo and just what we tall people needed.

They also have rooms with single beds and even bunkbeds.

We originally booked their Standard King, but when we arrived we were upgraded to their Superior King. Our Superior King room came with a king-sized bed, a TV, a small sofa with a round table, a refrigerator, and a coffee and tea station. It’s not much different from what you get with the Standard, but it comes with a bit more space.

Compared with our first Tokyo stay at La’gent Hotel Shinjuku Kabukicho, we were spoiled with space: we had plenty of room to walk around and space to put our luggage.

In the bathroom, they had complimentary bath amenities like shampoo, shower gel, and even bath salts and full skin care routines. They had nice, fluffy towels, a combination shower/tub, and a bidet toilet.

The Location

Shiba Park Hotel has a great location in Minato City, which is part of Tokyo’s Central Business District (it’s about a 15 minute walk from where we did our Shimbashi Hidden Gem Food Tour and learned about Tokyo’s after-work dining culture). So you won’t find a ton of tourists here like you would in Shinjuku.

The hotel is tucked away on a quiet street not far from Zōjō-ji Temple and Tokyo Tower. It’s also within walking distance of Daimon Station that connects multiple lines together, and is near Tokyo Station and Shinagawa Station, so it’s pretty easy to go exploring from here.

The Library

If you love books and reading, then you’re going to love Shiba Park Hotel. In the lobby, you’re greeted by an open wooden staircase lined with books stretching up to the second floor.

At the top of the stairs, you’ll find a reading lounge. There’s another lounge just off of reception as well. Each floor also has its own book nook with its own theme, like a Travel section or a Photography section.

They offer complimentary coffee and tea, as well as paid wine and beer, that you can enjoy for a cozy night in with a book.

The Dining

The on-site restaurant at Shiba Park Hotel is called The Dining. This restaurant offers a blend of Chinese Peking, Western, and Japanese dishes.

In the morning, The Dining serves a Western and Japanese breakfast buffet. For lunch and dinner, they have a set menu for each of their different cuisines with multiple courses and a lot of food. They also have an afternoon tea option.

We didn’t end up trying the restaurant because it seemed pricey, and we were able to find some great restaurants nearby.

Benefits of Staying at Shiba Park Hotel

When we stayed at Shiba Park Hotel, what stood out right away was how calm it felt compared to our previous Tokyo hotel. The library theme creates a cozy, quiet atmosphere that made it nice to come back and unwind after a full day of sightseeing.

The rooms were another major win for us. By Tokyo standards, they’re spacious, and having a king-sized bed was great after previous compact hotel stays. It made a real difference for sleep and comfort, and it’s one of those practical perks you don’t realize you need until you have it.

The hotel also has a laundry room, so you can plan to travel light and wash your clothes throughout your trip. Our friends used the laundry room and it worked well for them.

Location-wise, this hotel hits a sweet spot. It’s close enough to Tokyo Tower and multiple train stations to make getting around easy, but it’s tucked onto a quieter street in Minato City, so you’re not dealing with crowds right outside your door.

What I didn’t love

While we enjoyed our stay at Shiba Park Hotel, there are a few potential drawbacks I wanted to mention.

The lobby is beautiful, but reception is tucked away around a corner. So when we arrived, we didn’t know where to go to check in. They seemed to have staff standing around at other times who could help, but not at the time we arrived for some reason.

My Experience at Shiba Park Hotel

Overall, we had a wonderful stay at Shiba Park Hotel!

The hotel was comfortable, and having a king-sized bed in Tokyo was a real treat at the end of our Japan trip. It was nice to have some space to sprawl out and relax the night before taking a long flight home.

I loved the location. We chose this hotel because it was close to Tokyo Tower, which was our main attraction for our last day in Tokyo. But we found that this was also a good location just for getting around Tokyo and even catching the monorail to Haneda Airport.

Who Should Stay at Shiba Park Hotel

Shiba Park Hotel is perfect for those who want a quieter stay in Tokyo, while still having easy access to all the tourist hotspots. With this hotel, you don’t have to be in the chaotic center of the city, but you’ll still have easy access to train stations so you can get around to Shibuya, Shinjuku, Asakusa, and more.

It’s a great location if you’re interested in being near Tokyo Tower, TeamLab Borderless, or Hamarikyu Gardens.

The hotel is also the perfect choice if you’re coming from Haneda Airport since you can take the monorail from Hamamatsucho Station.
