Westin Peachtree Plaza Review: Where to Stay in Downtown Atlanta

The Westin Peachtree Plaza is a 73-story hotel in Downtown Atlanta with some of the most amazing city views. Check out my review of our stay at the Westin Peachtree Plaza.

The Westin Peachtree Plaza is a piece of Atlanta history. It was built in 1976 on the site of the old Governor’s Mansion. Back then, it was known simply as the Peachtree Plaza Hotel and it was the tallest building in Atlanta. It remained Atlanta’s tallest building until 1987, and it was the world’s tallest hotel for a single year.

The hotel has a unique cylindrical shape with reflective glass windows that makes it stand out in the Atlanta skyline.

Westin Peachtree Plaza Review

When I wanted an Atlanta staycation for my birthday with great city views, I knew the perfect place to stay — with the Peachtree Plaza’s floor-to-ceiling windows and prime downtown location, you’re almost guaranteed a great view.

Here’s everything you need to know about staying at the Westin Peachtree Plaza, one of the top hotels in Downtown Atlanta.

The Guest Room

The hotel has 1,073 guest rooms and suites. We stayed in a Premium guest room. The bedroom itself is pretty simple and nothing much to write home about. There was a comfortable bed, a large desk, extra seating, and an en-suite bathroom.

What makes the room special is the view.

We got lucky with a room on the 55th floor; with the Premium rather than the Traditional or Deluxe rooms you can typically expect a higher floor and a better view. We had probably one of the best views: looking north through the city, up through Midtown.

Every room has floor-to-ceiling windows so you can admire the amazing views all around.

The Amenities

Walking into the Westin Peachtree Plaza is kind of like walking into a maze. I love the architecture, but it can be a bit of hinderance when trying to find some of the amenities.

Back when it opened, the 7-story atrium used to have an indoor lake, and I would have loved to see that. Now it’s just your standard lobby with plenty of seating. They have a bar, a restaurant, a Starbucks, and a gift shop on the lower level.

There are 44 event rooms on the various levels of the atrium. There is a business center with internet access. The hotel even connects directly to AmericasMart and Southern Exchange.

The hotel also offers valet and a luggage stowing service. You can park with the valet before you check-in and after check-out until 4 p.m. You can also stow your luggage before and after you check-in and -out.

If you need access to the fitness center, it’s open 24 hours. The indoor pool is open year-round, though it has shorter hours in the winter because the glass-enclosed room does still get cold. You’ll find these on the top levels of the atrium.

The elevators in this hotel are really fast, which is a good thing for how many floors it has. It’s only an 85-second ride to the very top floor.

Up on the top floors, you’ll find the Sun Dial Restaurant, Bar & View (which gets its own section below).

Head up the scenic elevators to the 73rd floor of the Westin Peachtree Plaza to find the Sun Dial Restaurant, Bar & View. These glass elevators are separate from the ones that go to the guest rooms. They ride up the outside of the hotel and offer a view of the city as you ride up.

An upscale restaurant and cocktail lounge take up two levels, and an observation deck takes up one level. From up here, you’ll get 360-degree views of Atlanta from 723 feet in the air.

The Sun Dial Restaurant serves upscale American cuisine. The highlight here used to be that the restaurant rotated, but after an accident in 2017 it no longer rotates (and no word on if the feature will return). The food is a little too pricey for my taste, and they have an entrée requirement for dining, so you can’t just share appetizers over the view.

The good news is, you don’t have to dine to get a view. That’s where The View comes in. For $10 per adult and $5 per child, you can enjoy the views from this observation level with information on the city’s landmarks.

Benefits of Staying at the Westin Peachtree Plaza

The Westin Peachtree Plaza is right in Downtown Atlanta. It’s walking distance from Centennial Olympic Park and the amazing museums around the park. You’re just a few minutes from the Georgia Aquarium, College Football Hall of Fame, World of Coca-Cola, the National Center for Civil and Human Rights, and the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

The hotel has amazing city views. You can also head up to the Sun Dial Restaurant, Bar & View to dine with city views or just admire the panorama.

It also has a huge fitness studio and an indoor pool, so you can enjoy a swim even in the winter.
