Mad Hatter’s (Gin &) Tea Party Review

Head down the rabbit hole for a pop-up theatrical cocktail experience hosted by the Mad Hatter. The 1.5 hour immersive Mad Hatter’s (Gin &) Tea Party experience has you sipping on gin-infused cocktails as you descend into madness. Check out my review of the Mad Hatter’s (Gin &) Tea Party here.

The Mad Hatter’s (Gin &) Tea Party is teatime mayhem in Wonderland. For 90 minutes, you get to leave the real world behind and enjoy an immersive theatrical experience that is utter madness.

I got to experience this manic tea party in Atlanta, Georgia in Underground Atlanta. The event has left Atlanta, but it is currently touring around the world to cities like São Paulo, Brazil and Kansas City, Kansas.

You can’t show up to the Mad Hatter’s party without a hat! When you enter, you get to pick out a hat to wear for the night and stop in a photo op room.

Then you’re greeted by the March Hare with a small gin-infused potion that will send you down the rabbit hole. You’ll walk through a neon-painted room that appears to get smaller toward the end, before being welcomed into the garden for the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party.

Down the Rabbit Hole, Mad Hatter's (Gin &) Tea Party

Flowers and vines hang from the ceilings, the walls are painted with oversized flowers, the tables are decked out with bouquets, clocks, candles, and antique decorations.

You’re led to your spot at the long tables by one of the Tweedles who also brings you a tray of finger foods that includes an Egg & Cress Sandwich, Mediterranean Cucumber Cup, Moroccan Orange & Cardamom Cake, and a bottle of water. You’ll definitely want to eat before you come as these snacks aren’t enough to soak up all the alcohol you’ll be drinking.

Your hosts, the Mad Hatter, March Hare, and Dormouse, introduce themselves and give you a few simple rules: don’t touch your drink until you are told (as what you’re served isn’t always the complete cocktail) and if you hear the Queen, don’t speak!

Tea Time

Throughout the night, your hosts will call you out by your hat to participate in various activities from demonstrating how to crush flower petals into a cocktail to sharing any hot gossip you’ve learned during the night to answering “what time is it?” (it’s always 6 o’clock; time for tea!).

Crazy Hat, Mad Hatter's (Gin &) Tea Party

I, as Red-Kissy-Lips Hat, got called out for having the audacity to show my face in here after what happened last time; oops, guess Red-Kissy-Lips Hat is one messy bitch!

They also encourage you to play a variety of games amongst yourselves like Would You Rather and Two Truths And A Lie.

As the show is 21+, you can expect some adult humor. The Hare is horny, your favorite childhood book characters are cursing, and there are some fun instances of breaking the fourth wall.

So how do you get out of here in 90 minutes if it’s always 6 o’clock? Well, the storyline involves the Mad Hatter, a tumultuous relationship with Time, a very important phone call, and a group sing-a-long. It’s all so mad, it’s a little hard to describe, so you’ll just have to see it for yourself!

The Tea

All of the delicious “teas” are made with Gunpowder Irish Gin. You can get non-alcoholic drinks if necessary. The event details say you get 3 drinks, but you also get a bonus welcome shot.

Drink Me Potion

The first drink is the welcome Drink Me potion, which is a shot of gin, vermouth, Aperol, and strawberry limeade.

The Pool Of Tears

Pool Of Tears

The second drink is The Pool Of Tears. This drink was served warm and is the most tea-like. It’s comprised of gin, hibiscus tea, limeade, and St. Germain. I was surprised that it was warm, but it ended up being my favorite concoction.

Twinkle Twinkle Little Bat

Twinkle Twinkle Little Bat

The third drink is the Twinkle Twinkle Little Bat. This cocktail was made with gin, falernum, lime juice, pineapple juice, luster dust, and dehydrated flower petals.

The Smoking Caterpillar

Smoking Caterpillar

The fourth drink is The Smoking Caterpillar, which is the most visually appealing of them all. It’s made with gin, triple sec, cranberry juice, green tea, limeade, sugar cane syrup, and absinthe. The Tweedles then come around and put a rosemary-infused smoke bubble on top.

What Was Great About the Event

  • The drinks were so inventive and delicious.
  • The actors were hilarious and made the event so much fun.
  • The hats were whimsical, and you could choose from a variety of normal hats and outlandish hats.
  • The décor was beautiful and did a great job of transporting you to a Wonderland-like garden.

What Was Not So Great

  • The sound system wasn’t the best; the background music was loud, so it was difficult to hear the actors at times, even though they had microphones, and it was hard to talk to friends.
  • Sometimes I felt rushed to finish my drinks. I felt like we had a long time to drink the first cocktail, but not as much time for the last two.
