If you didn’t know, I’ve been learning to figure skate! This year, I’m checking out Atlanta’s best outdoor ice skating rinks to get into the winter spirit – and to get a little extra practice in.
Avalon on Ice
Avalon on Ice has created the perfect winter wonderland. This Rockefeller-inspired uncovered outdoor ice skating rink is located at the popular Avalon shopping center in front of the movie theater.
This rink has a mini Zamboni consisting of a tractor with a Zamboni attachment and they regularly reset the ice, so the ice doesn’t get nearly as torn up as other outdoor ice rinks.
Avalon on Ice is open from November 18, 2018 through January 21, 2019.
Price: $18 for adults and $14 for children. Prices include skate rental.
Skate the Station
Skate the Station at Atlantic station is the largest outdoor ice skating rink in the Southeast. This year, the ice rink is located down Winter Wonderland Lane, or Tower Street. You can park near Stairwell 4 in the garage and enter Skate the Station from the stairs on Tower Street.
The ice on this rink is much better than at other outdoor rinks. They have a real Zamboni to keep the ice smooth and they resurface it regularly. Going after the holiday rush also means that this popular rink isn’t as crowded as during peak season.
When I was there, some of the employees noticed I had my own fancy skates, and after they resurfaced the ice, they let me go on first and show off a couple moves. Though I can’t do anything near as fancy as they were probably expecting, it was a fun experience to have the spotlight on me and it’s super surreal to have the ice to yourself.
Skate the Station is open November 17, 2018 through January 21, 2019.
Price: $15 for adults, $12 for children and seniors, $10 for military. Skip the Line pass (online pre-purchase) is $17+fees for adults and $14+fees for children. Prices include skate rental.
The Rink at Park Tavern
Park Tavern in Piedmont Park has brought back its covered ice skating rink for another year. The Rink at Park Tavern features an 80×40 foot rink right next to their spacious park-side dining, so if you come at the right time you can get dinner after your skate.
I didn’t really enjoy skating here. The ice was extremely rough because they don’t have a mini Zamboni, and the crowded restaurant with football on the TV took away from the winter wonderland ambiance.
The Rink at Park Tavern is open November 30, 2018 through January 21, 2019.
Price: $15 on weekdays, $20 on weekends. Parking is $3 on weekdays and $5 on weekends. Prices include skate rental.
Shed a tear for those ice rinks not returning this year.
- Marietta Square put the plans for its outdoor rink on ice this season due to increased competition in the popular holiday activity throughout metro-Atlanta.
- The Battery Atlanta at SunTrust Park cited similar reasons for nixing their ice skating rink this year, opting for a nightly light show instead.
I’ll be updating this post with more reviews of the outdoor ice skating rinks in and around Atlanta through the rest of the season, so check back later!
When was the last time you went ice skating? Tell me about it in the comments!
